Living Outside High Walls; My Newfound Home.
2/25/2007 12:36:06 AM

I left the Philippines because of suffocation. There was no freedom to move around and enjoy a normal life without the constant presence of a cold steel tucked in my waist. I hated it and I left.

I left but I still love my country. I still call it home despite the bitter reality that I cannot live the freedom I am enjoying now in a foreign country.

But lately, somebody showed me the other side of those high walls I built around me. I just found out that there exists a place I can call home......

A place I call BNSFIT

Weird name, n'est-ce pas?

Hmm… that is a coded word and I will only tell once I get my ‘citizenship’…

My home

It is neither made of steel nor stone
Nor wood nor glass nor iron;
But amidst any misfortune and storm
It stands, magnificent and strong —
Such is my home.

Built not by machine nor by hand
It stands not on a barren land;
On a lofty plane it is nestled deftly
It’s foundation, as hard as anything can be —
Well-built, it must be.

Rooms, it has; and doors and windows, too
All wide open for everyone to pass through;
Walls, I know there is none
And locks, I can’t think of a need for one —
My home welcomes everyone.

Inside, it is warm and soft and cozy
Everyone who visits is hummed a melody;
Its rhythm, not quite out of the ordinary
But its beat, sincere and steady —
In it, I dwell comfortably.

At night, the dweller in my home sleeps peacefully
Of the howling winds, she does not worry;
The wars outside, she is not at all bothered
The good always wins, she is assured —
A secure heart doesn’t easily get injured.

Letter of intent
1 2x2 ID picture
3 whole body pictures (formal attire, casual attire, beach attire)
20-page essay
comprehensive CV
birth certificate
college diploma
land titles (if applicable)
proof of income

While your application is reviewed, you may go to the next step of the process, which is giving me the code.

VF
3/2/2007 11:55:38 AM

my home ‘Chateau BNSFIT’
is just as sure as the existence of the Sun.
strong as it can be
to withstand the tests of time;
but
it needs two hearts to beat as one.

...encode my pass-key ‘my dear’
and you’ll be the one...

“VPZ FWPM J BNSFIT. WITHOUT WAX, VF.”

CLUES:
deduce then use logic;
all Alpha characters;
a knowledge in Spanish;
you need a mirror to read the final encoding

.... hmmm... MSB, wanna try?

Sherma Benosa
3/2/2007 7:58:56 PM

Disclaimer: I will try to decrypt the message, only because someone has thrown me a challenge and hell if I don't rise up to it. It is not because I need — or want — to be “the one” (whatever that means). Huuuuu.

Substitution. Alpha characters. Logic. The use of mirror.

He he he. VF, I've broken VPZ FWPM J BNSFIT. Now, give me a clue to the WITHOUT WAX, VF code. ‘Knowledge in Spanish’ as a clue is inadequate.

Tell me: Do I also need a mirror to read it? Looks like hindi. Give me one more clue, gayyem. Just one more clue and I swear I’ll break the code — and, with it, your neck. He he he.

Sherma Benosa
3/2/2007 8:04:00 PM

Maricar! Kumusta ti Manila Zoo, gayyem? Naku, allawadam no makigtot ni Jaynann kadagidiay kalanglanga ni Manong VF. Ammom met laeng ti agalaw? He he.

Hey Manong Roger! Have a good weekend too.

Hello Manong Rudy. Naglawa ti iisemam, a. Kasta siguro a talaga no addan ni Seniorita, ania? he he he

Sherma Benosa
3/2/2007 11:56:06 PM

Ha Ha Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha Ha Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha Ha Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

No need for additional clues, VF. I've broken the code.
Now, I'm getting at your neck.

He he he he!

Maricar Cabotaje
3/3/2007 2:09:06 AM

Ammom Sherma mabuteng ketdi da Jaynann ken Hagoth di rumuar diay elepanten? Kodak kodak kunami ket ne ta tumaray da lattan, awanen a. Ti nagtripan mi ket dagitay karkarupa ni Manong __ a matsing, hehehe.

VF
3/3/2007 11:51:26 AM

I am sure you did not sleep well decoding that pass-key Ms. Benosa! I bet my neck you bullied somebody to help you decode that last part hehehe!

La man ngarud, ibagam man kaniak no ania dayta “without wax”! Ei, don’t tell me it’s a floor wax –my castle doesn’t need floor waxing hehehe!

Sans cire...

...but (and) lots of ‘without-wax’ intentions!

Tell me more, tell me more!

HAR HAR HAR!

Oist Maricar adingko, siguradom a diay nakitam a matsing ket karuprupak? La ngarud i-describe mo man...

naka-gel met laeng? Huuuuu.... ask Ms. Benosa!

You encrypted same communique as the first. Huuuuuuuuu

Maricar Cabotaje
3/4/2007 3:39:40 PM

Awan inbagak a karkarupam Manong VF wen, hehehe. Diay maysa a nakitak a matsing ket ne ta naglabbaga metten ti patong na, agkukurrot pay dagitay dadduma.

Sherma how was your weekend?

Sherma Benosa
3/4/2007 10:13:56 PM

Hey VF. I hate to tell you this, Buddy, but you are a poor “cryptologist.” Don’t fret, though. You can still become better. I’ll see to it that you receive a good training — from the “expert,” no less.

Here’s your first module: Decrypt this code to get my message.

MCK0113C 02G01OP EJ1519G UP

Clues for the first phase (easy part)
Numbers always come in pairs (2 digits). A pair represents a letter. Figure out the rule.
A letter belonging to the A-J string represents the second letter to its left in the alphabet.
A letter belonging to the K-T string represents the third letter to its right in the alphabet.
A letter belonging to the U-Z string represents itself.
Logic plus some common sense are required to decrypt the message.

Ok. There you go. When you have broken the code, post the decoded message here and I will give you the clue to the next phase.

Good luck.

Nothing follows.

Clifton Pascua
3/4/2007 11:36:33 PM

Waaaaa!

Ania daytoyen ngay Ms. Benosa!

How about this: MY SHERMA BENOSA PASCUA.

HAK HAK HAK!

Goooooooooood! La ngarud, next one. Ngem ne, ibagam pay nga umuna diay impadecriptko kenka. Huuuu... KAUR!

Clifton Pascua
3/4/2007 11:38:48 PM

Ei Maricar, no awan ti 'naka-gel' a matsing a nakitayo, awanak ngarud idiay. Ken maysa ket adda ti ka-date ko idi kalman hehehe.

Sherma Benosa
3/5/2007 12:45:50 AM

Ha ha ha ha ha!
Kasta unay ellekko, dakayo!
HA HA HA HA!
Looks like you've assumed too much, my friend.

The encoded message consists only of 18 characters; your answer has 20. Try again, buddy.

I suggest you decode, not guess.

Huuuuuuuuuuu! Awan daytoy.

Sherma Benosa
3/5/2007 1:14:21 AM

18 because you read two number digits as one (one pair = 1 letter, remember?)

La, go back and try again...

VF
3/5/2007 12:08:09 PM

Hey Bully-my-buddy, I am not guessing at all... am just testing the waters huuuuu! And it’s hot, scalding hot! I can feel you are asserting your being the most “ragu’” Amazon ei?

HAK HAK HAK!

Lemisi – PANAMA BEARS CHOSE US ?

Why not, they are your reliable pals in the Andes anyway… hmmm, I see you asked for their advice...and it’s not a bad choice at all.

...you are not a bad choice at all hehehehe...

ei, you still have to tell me the pass key before you can get into my BNSFIT, my HOME.

Sherma Benosa
3/5/2007 6:48:56 PM

Ah, so you don't really believe I've broken your code, eh?

Here it is:
UOY EVOL I AMREHS. SIN CERE, VF. (Must I explain pa what the message means?)

Then you reposted the same message, using boxes as your code. Huuuuuu! Just one look at it and I got it, remember?

Sherma Benosa
3/5/2007 6:58:44 PM

Hmmmmm... Impressive, Mr. Pascua. Looks like you've got some logic, too. Good one.

Now, onto the next phase. (Yup, you're not yet done! He he he.)

Here's the clue:

O, goddess of the wilderness, keeper of the key
The cleverest of preys surrenders to thee
Legend has it that poinsettia nursed in thy bosom
And to thy calmness and peace, the sun comes home.

Good luck, Buddy!

Maricar Cabotaje

VF
3/6/2007 12:40:32 AM

Wow! Looks like you just unlocked “my-door” Ms. Benosa. I can see you deserve to keep that key. Why not, you seem to have that strong character to tame VF.

Ngem kuidaw, keep that key safe! (isem a babatiiiiiiiiiiiit)

Pst Maricar my sister, ania’t makunam?

VF
3/6/2007 12:45:32 AM

AHEM!

O, goddess of the amazons, bully of thine heart
You make me whimper, should I kiss the dirt?
To succumb to your whims but MY key is safe
I’ll come home to your bosom and live in peace.

Kunak to ket! Diay immuna nga imbagak ket kusto. La, let me rearrange that “PANAMA BEARS CHOSE US:

AUCSAP ASONEB AMREHS (Must I explain pa what the message means?) hehehehe!

Ania ngay ti premiok? Will you bring me to that PETA theatre again?

Sherma Benosa
3/6/2007 1:26:53 AM

Oh good heavens! You must be a good student. You've learned fast, MCP!

Your turn. Come up with a good message. Just make sure a ma-challenge-ak. Not like kadaydiay immuna nga attempt mo. He he he.

Sherma Benosa
3/6/2007 1:27:08 AM

Or maybe I am a good teacher...

Clifton Pascua
3/6/2007 2:19:23 AM

Aminen? Pa moi Mlle. Benosa. Not VF. Jamais, never, nada, pakpakawan!

Hey, VF is the best. Remember this: Veni-Vedi-Veci?

The best of the amazons is finally conquered by VF! Come Ms. Benosa, render service to your master.

HAR HAR HAR!

Sherma Benosa
3/6/2007 2:54:25 AM

No way, Mr. VF.

Clifton Pascua
3/6/2007 3:10:26 AM

Mansanilia, kayatmo? Okay, wanna see the recipé? Voila:

I will kiwar-kiwar with my tammudo, sweeten with my katay and kiss around the lips of the cup...

Sherma Benosa
3/6/2007 3:13:00 AM

Oppppssss. Sowi, I changed my mind. I want red wine pala.

Clifton Pascua
3/6/2007 5:36:09 AM

VF
3/6/2007 8:44:27 AM

Okay, tell me what this is Ms. Benosa…

They were first used on that special day
when VF first met the Bully last May.
Then followed thereon for VF to say,
“I Love You Bully this Christmas day,
on Valentine’s day or any other day”.

Maricar Cabotaje
3/6/2007 4:10:13 PM

Ehem ehem, ana daytan...

Sherma Benosa
3/6/2007 6:39:12 PM

3/6/2007 9:19:32 PM

HEHEHEHE!

Bay-am Maricar ta testingek man ti laing daytoy a Ms. Benosa.

Ei Ms. Benosa, talaga a dimo ammo ania?

Here are some clues:

1. It can be 4 letters or more. It can also be more than one word but not to exceed six words.
2. Somebody once asked me why that much? I told her: "three can be expressed in many ways."

La.... go, go Ms. Benosa.

Here’s another one Ms. Benosa. Lemisi how fast your singkit eyes are. Find me the meaning of an acronym I once gave to you.

Go go go!

My home

It is neither made of steel nor stone
Nor wood nor glass nor iron;
But amidst any misfortune and storm
It stands, magnificent and strong —
Such is my home.

Built not by machine nor by ham
It stands not on a barren land;
On a loftiest plane it is nestled deftly
It’s foundation, as hard as anything can be —
Well-built, it must be.

Room, it has; and doors and windows, too
All wide open for everyone to pass through;
Balls, I know there is non
And locks, I can’t think of a need for on —
My home welcomes everyone.

Inside, it is warm and sof and cozy
Everyone who visits is hummed a melody;
Its rhythm, not quite out of the ordinary
Hat its beat, sincere and steady —
In it, I dwell comfortably.

At night, the dweler in my home sleeps peacefully
Of the howlling winds, she does not worry;
The wars outside, she is not at all bothered
The good always wins, she is assured —
A secure hearty doesn’t easily get injured.

VF

Oist Ms. Benosa, tsk tsk tsk....

Is that losing grounds or losing interest? Put on your eyeglasses and edit...

Okay, here's the clue:

"I gathered patiently the materials I used to construct
the sand was sieved to separate them from the rocks
the rocks as a base, the sand to fill up the gaps
place those rocks my dear, patiently, without a rush."

Good Luck.

Maricar

It's the "sifting" rule I am trying to figure out. So don't laugh... huuuuu

VF
3/10/2007 10:31:18 AM

Ops, just got out from hell... lemisi how's my student doing...

THREE DOZENS, LONG-STEMMED BURGUNDY-RED ROSES -hmmm... magalingka sa usapan ng puso hehehe... sige ngarud, I'll give you an A+ for that.

And the other one? I told you, arrange the 'rocks', nevermind the sand.

Tsk tsk tsk... you are slow Ms. Benosa, too slow. Ei, you ever considered having a daughter, like-father? Naku, lagot ka kay Poinee... hehehehe!

hek hek hek!

Okay, here's another one, let's go numbers this time:

If 'Eight' is an even number, HOW DO YOU MAKE 'SEVEN' EVEN?

VF

Maricaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.... ania ti nakatirmid?

:-)

Sherma Benosa
3/10/2007 8:55:30 PM

I'll answer the number problem first. It's easy. He he he.
I'll remove the "s" from seven. Now it's even.
:-)

VF
3/11/2007 12:37:56 AM

Hmmm... you are not bad Ms. Benosa. Siempre, nalaka dayta a question, para ubbing.

Sherma Benosa
3/11/2007 2:52:27 AM

Ikabilko man la ti sungbatnan. Kantiaw la a kantiaw, imbagak la ngaruden nga ammokon ket! Huuuuu...

The acronym is MSB = MySweetBully. Hah!

And here's the rule:

Pay attention to the words in the original poem (My Home) that were either changed or bastardized. Take note of the removed letters, as well as the replacements. Then sift the "sand from the rocks."

Nyehehehehehe.

Ano'ng say mo, suh?

Sherma Benosa
3/11/2007 2:54:06 AM

DROP OF WATER

A single drop of water
grows into a river
that flows relentlessly
around hills and mountains
over valleys and plains
along a path
both straight and crooked
wide and narrow
in the hope that someday
she might reach the ocean
where she might attain peace
and have her rest.

But for now she’s just a river
that flows relentlessly
around hills and mountains
over valleys and plains
along a path
both straight and crooked
wide and narrow
in the hope that someday
she might reach the ocean
where she might attain peace
and have her rest
after having grown out of
a single drop of water.

I Found You

Looking for real love
in the hollowness of nowhere
among false deities
and of nights of wilderness
void of happiness.

I saw your beauty
radiating above others
floating like lilies
the first warm day of spring
brought me happiness.

SUNSET BY THE SEA

Fiery shades of red
Dazzle across the canvas;
A tint of orange
Lingers in the painter’s brush;
Hush the vast expanse.

Enchanting music
Of waves coming home to shore
Serenades the Sun
Lulling in the horizon;
Precious peace, she hums!

//Your turn...

QUELLE VIE !

I just arrived from a very tiring trip, took a bottle of Budlight, switched the tele on CNN, slumped on the coach and reciprocated PB’s welcome kiss.

I’m grateful she is there, always happy to meet me every time I come home late, never complaining.

Ah, quelle vie!

But what life? I wish there is more life than worrying too much about life.

Ahhh... I think I deserve something better than a bottle of Bud. Let me see if a bottle of Remy Martin can put me to sleep. Never mind the schedule tomorrow. Que sera, sera...

Bon nuit PB...

Breathtaking colors
Gleam in the serene waters;
A few shades of gray
Serve as the tableau’s backdrop;
Ah, enchanting sight!

Gleaming silhouette
Gracefully makes her entrance;
Tiny sparklers
Disperse themselves far and wide;
Night has fin’lly come.

Sherma Benosa
4/9/2007 8:08:47 PM

Hello Gayyem Maricar. Umayak mangarruba dita yanmo damdama. Ka-textko ni Ina itay. Ana, agkikita tayo?

Sherma Benosa
4/12/2007 8:11:01 PM

Alrighty, VF. I think we’re ready to experiment on other metering styles.

First metering style: 1-3-5-3-1. Unit is word (not syllable).
Example:

Bask
On the smile
Of the stars twinkling brightly
Against the dark
canvas.

Smile
At the canvas
Basking brightly at the stars
twinkling in the
dark.

Second metering style: 1-5-7-9-7-5-1. Unit is syllable.
Example:

Walk
Out of the alleys
Of shallow imaginings
Of impossible dreams and pursuits
And futile and empty quests.
Such labyrinth is not
Safe.

Tread
Along corridors
Of meaningful endeavors
Lofty undertakings and pursuits
And fundamental journeys.
Such ventures feed the
Soul.

//I gave two stanzas in each example I provided but we may give only one each time we post (narigat, sika). Your turn, buddy…

Sherma Benosa
5/14/2007 2:52:53 AM

Just plain sgt, Mister. No need for dakkel a tian. Dakkel-puso laeng. :-)

My sutsot is for a special use. My silbato is for erring drivers.

The right direction is not "plottable," Mr. P. You cannot find it in the map of mortals.

You know you are headed to the right direction when the tigidug-tigidug of your heart becomes louder as you move forward.

VF
5/14/2007 3:01:51 AM

Sherma Benosa

Hey (Taipan) VF. I’ve finished reading one of the books we bought. I guess I have to admit that you have an exquisite taste in book, buddy. To think I had thought I knew all the good ones, eh? Now I’m not quite sure anymore… Dammit, you humbled me!

J.A. (through you) has definitely raised the bar with which I rate books. In fact, I’m now re-thinking the ratings I’ve given John Grisham and Dan Brown.

Know what? There are many elements in the book which can be used as springboard for discussion (or maybe debate). Espionage, treachery, cultural differences, power, money, gender issues, love, corporate maneuverings, etc... Wanna try me, buddy?

How about this for a start: Casey or Orlanda?

Sherma Benosa
5/22/2007 12:21:48 AM

Okay, okay! You’ve read the book 20 years ago and you no longer remember the plot very well. Ala ngarud, let me outline what I think each lady represents (tapno awan rason… ken tapno saanka unay nareklamo, hehehe).

Orlanda is Eurasian, which is a bad joss (sorry, can’t refrain myself from using the terminologies in the book) for a lady in Hong Kong because there, Eurasians are hated by both Europeans and Asians (the Chinese). She represents what I’d consider a traditional woman: beautiful, good home-maker (can cook, among others), very feminine, and trained to please her man. To borrow Marlowe’s words: “Orlanda’s quality and has what it takes to make a man content, happy, alive as a man.” She is rumored in the book as the kind who would spend her man’s money “as if there’s no tomorrow.” The author suggested that (1) she’s smart (‘smart’ here means she knows how to use her beauty to get what she wants, which is to get herself a husband, and not stay just someone’s mistress), and (2) that she would make a good wife — she would always have a ready smile for her husband, would soothe her man’s bad mood by being always pleasant, and would not mind if her husband would eventually have an affair or affairs with younger women when he's tired of her (having several wives is presented in the book as an acceptable practice for Hong Kong Chinese men).

Casey, on the other hand, is American. Like Orlanda, she too is beautiful. She is smart. She became Linc’s partner in Par-Con on her own merit. In fact, she has helped build Par-Con. It is even suggested that it was through her cunning that Linc was able to recover from his financial losses when he and his wife divorced. She has an independent streak, and is described as better than most men in business — this, at a time when woman executives were unheard of and scoffed at. She wants to make her own money. As a woman, she is a head-turner, but she is not as feminine as Orlanda (in Linc's point of view). Although it’s also suggested in the book that she would make a good wife, she would not be content waiting around for her man to arrive. Instead, she would also be out, making money. She would be talking with her man about business, and would be involved in corporate affairs.

In the book, Casey and Linc are business partners for more than 6 years. They have never been lovers, although they have an agreement that they would get married on Casey’s 27th birthday, which is barely three months away. Until then, Casey will try to have her ‘drop dead’ money; she doesn’t want to have it said that she is marrying Linc for his money.

Casey loves Linc, and it seems that Linc cares about her too, but soon Linc is drawn to Orlanda because she is everything Casey is not (it was suggested many times in the book that he fell in love with Orlanda). Orlanda, on the other hand, has set out to get Linc to marry her, maybe because she has eventually fallen in love with him, but definitely because he is her only chance to make it in Hong Kong — or to get out of Hong Kong.

My exquisite choice of books did you say Ms. Benosa? Right, I’ve known that all along. So as my choice of XX’s ! HEHEHEHE

So you see, I have always been on the look out for Caseys who will pilot my jet when something goes wrong with me–strong willed and hard headed! :-) 'Been with lousy-sweet Orlandas before but they are only good while the honey is sweet but will abandon you when things get sour. (remember MY Husband Store?)

And yup, I’ve read that book many years ago when I was still teaching research statistics and mind you, my probe says there aren’t much Caseys in this world. And I wonder if one day, you can land my jet safely somewhere –where sunsets are most beautiful!

I know you’ll like Noble House just as much you’ll appreciate Jeff Archer’s Kane & Abel. They are no match of course with (your) make-believe authors of flying jockeys! What was it again – Harry Potter? hehehe! I choose fiction books based on facts.

Get hold of these books Ms. Bully: The ‘Far Pavilions’ for romance, ‘Shogun’ for medieval Japan and Centennial to understand how the American Wild West was tamed. Just like the two books you just read, you’ll enjoy the intricate webbing of characters without getting lost.

A little introduction to world history and to understand how the Jews finally found their promised land, read Exodus by James Clavell.

After that, I’ll give you an exam!

HAR HAR HAR!

Ei, howdy Maricar? Sorry kaanakan, medio paliado toy angkelmo! Homesick siguro hehehe!

Sherma Benosa
5/31/2007 9:37:27 PM

Hey Dunross! How are you, buddy? Feeling better? Joss!

Yup, I am Casey. You chose well, my friend.

But do watch out. Casey IS the power that made Linc and saved Dunross and the Noble House from disaster. I am sure she can un-make Linc and throw Dunross back into the abyss he once found himself in — if she so desires. But she won't, and that's what I like most about her. Besides being so smart and beautiful, she is innately good... and honest... and not vengeful. Of all the characters in the book, she is the person I respect the most... (besides Dunross, of course. But that's a different story. While JC's Casey is in love with Linc, the Casey in me is in love with Dunross. He he he...)

Re: my take over with what was ONCE your Husband Store

Reading the book makes me feel lacking in finesse. When Linc and Casey started their bid to take control of Noble House, they did so with style... Now, I'm feeling like a neophyte...

... but what the heck? They failed to get the Noble House... I successfully took control of The Husband Store.

... style or no style!

Nyehehehehehehehe!

sour-graping loser ha ?

Le-mi-si if I can refresh my memory: Say you are KC and I’m Ian Dunross.

Remember that party Ian threw when the two American investors arrived in Hong Kong?

Hmmm... KC was exquisitely dressed there that went perfectly well with her slim features along with the ever insistent and imposing, hard-headed character –wanting to join the clubs where ONLY NICE MEN BELONG! –the way I know you, I guess hehehe!

If I were Dunross, do you think I can trust Casey Ms. Benosa?

Smile...

VF
6/5/2007 1:33:48 AM

Orlanda! Ayeyee

Joss Ms. KC! I need somebody I can discuss pertinent things –intellectually!

Can you?

Sherma Benosa
6/5/2007 1:48:49 AM

Trust, Dunross?

Casey has shown many times that she is not just someone you can trust... she is also someone you would respect.

Even if Orlanda and Casey are each other's enemy, Casey saved Orlanda's life during the fire... and upon Linc's death, she reached out to Orlanda, and offered to help her start anew.

Among all the good things Casey has done, this is the ultimate test of her character... and she passed, with flying colors.

Can't you trust that kind of a person, Dunross?

Sherma Benosa
6/5/2007 8:59:15 PM

Your question as to whether or not I can handle intellectual discussions is moot, mister.

In fact, I strongly believe that all we need to resolve is whether or not you can match my wit.

Can you, Buddy?

La ngarud, let’s play a poker game: If Dunross was to choose who to save but one life; will it be Orlanda or Casey? (tho-not-in-the-book)

Lay your cards Lady...

Sherma Benosa
6/6/2007 3:09:29 AM

I suggest that he save Orlanda.

Casey is very much capable of saving herself.

VF
6/6/2007 3:45:41 AM

Ayayeeee… you ain’t got a poker face Ms. Casey! Your short, very short answer, which is not very like you, is betraying you!

Now, which one is which: you are jealous or just playing tough like the-good-gracious-circle-of men?

I would say that Casey should have not ventured in Hong-Kong in the first place. Remember how those Singkit-eyes described her. GP?

:-))

Sherma Benosa
6/6/2007 5:40:20 AM

Neither, Buddy.

GP? Yeah, I did laugh out loud when I first came across it. The Hong Kong Chinese (in the book) are loose-tongued... they are such a character, aren't they? They amused me so... he he he.

:))

Sherma Benosa
6/14/2007 9:36:24 PM

Answer to the first question:
I'll choose the Tai-pan. Not only was he the most interesting man in the book, he was also the most clever.

Answer to the second question:
The Orlanda in the book is a good person, despite the fact that she was used by Quillan as a pawn. And she was helpless, too. It was easy for Casey to reach out to her in her (Orlanda) time of need. So like Casey, I would also reach out to her if I know she needs me.

However, if Orlanda was devious and vengeful, the decision to reach out would be much tougher. For instance, would you reach out to someone who stabs you in the back? I may not. But then again, if I were put in a situation where my action/inaction would result in either a life saved or lost, I will always choose to save the person, even if she was my enemy. Never in my conscience will I let someone die, knowing I could have done something to prevent it.

VF
6/15/2007 1:28:34 AM

Hmmm… knowing the best in you Ms. Benosa, I already expected those answers!

One more question, if Linc Barlett did not die in the story, who do you think will he marry?

Sub-question and don’t base it from the book, whose character would you think most men will marry for: Orlanda’s or KC’s?

Sherma Benosa

New center to document Philippine dialects

By Peter La. Julian
Northern Luzon Bureau
Last updated 07:11am (Mla time) 06/18/2007

BATAC, ILOCOS NORTE -- Instead of focusing solely on promoting Filipino as the national language, the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) is now looking at the development, propagation and preservation of the country’s more than 179 dialects and regional languages.

“The KWF leadership has agreed to establish a center for information, documentation and research on the languages and various literatures of the Philippines,” KWF Chair Ricardo Ma. Nolasco said.

Nolasco, who spoke in Filipino, delivered the keynote address at a recent international gathering here of 182 Filipino educators, scholars and writers from the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, the United States and Japan.

Called “Nakem” (consciousness or maturity in Iloko), the three-day gathering at the Mariano Marcos Memorial State University tackled, besides the Ilocano diaspora, the state of Philippine dialects and languages.

Nolasco said the center, to be established within three years, would create original and model dictionary, grammar and orthography (spelling), scholarly journals and literacy materials and references for teaching various disciplines.

He said the center would be a storehouse of data on various dialects and languages, and would be equipped with audio and video recording of communicative events, including annotations and commentaries.

The project is in line with the policy, “Isang Bansa, Maraming Wika” (One Nation, Many Languages), which is the basis for this year’s language theme, “Many Languages, Strong Country,” Nolasco said.

English, as one of the country’s official languages, will also be enhanced, the KWF chair said.

Dialects a big advantage

The policy has been formulated in keeping with the fact that the Filipino is multilingual and multicultural, and that the country’s having more than 170 dialects and regional languages is not a handicap but a big advantage, according to Nolasco.

“It is ordinary for a Filipino to know how to speak two or more languages,” he said, citing the case of President Macapagal-Arroyo who can speak Kapampangan, Sinebwano, Iloko, Tagalog, English and Spanish.

The country, however, has a national language, Filipino, that has become a common language for various ethnolinguistic groups.

Although Filipino is not the mother tongue of most Filipinos, it has become their second language, according to Nolasco.

Tagalog syntax, grammar

He acknowledged that Filipino was simply Tagalog in syntax and grammar, with no grammatical element or lexicon coming from Iloko, Sinebwano, Ilonggo and other major Philippine languages.

This is contrary to the intention of Republic Act No. 7104 that requires that the national language be developed and enriched by the lexicon of the country’s other dialects and languages.

The KWF is working toward that direction and would conduct research and studies not only on the national language but also on the country’s dialects and languages, Nolasco said.

He said the KWF would be strengthening its various programs on Philippine lexicography, grammar, national translation, phonology, phonetics, orthography, language mapping, including literacy projects and language teaching.

I think Linc will marry Orlanda. He's just head over heels with her.

I'm not quite sure, but I feel most men prefer the likes of Orlanda — beautiful, feminine, home maker.

Casey represents the brainy, beautiful, and smart. Dealing with the likes of her will be very challenging to any man. Only the successful and the brave would consider having her.

In my opinion...

The Casey in me had always wanted Linc to marry Casey. To drop Orlanda. And I've also considered the fact that he may just be infatuated with Orlanda.

I hope you are right and I am wrong. Just this time. Because honestly speaking, I think Linc doesn't deserve a weakling like Orlanda.

He needs a strong woman... he needs Casey.

Sherma Benosa
6/19/2007 6:11:58 AM

Don't you think you just want Linc to choose Casey (because you yourself prefer Casey over Orlanda)?

VF
6/19/2007 6:22:19 AM

AND I AM RIGHT, wherever we go baby.

HEHEHEHEHE!

Infatuations last only weeks if not a day or two. Real love stays!

It's a tricky question you are asking Ms. Benosa. But I tell you again, there are no conditions when you love somebody. There are no measures.

But if you insist for an answer, I'll go for the brainy, beautiful, and smart.

...and why not Bold & Beautiful, gaya sa tele?

KEH KEH KEH!

Sherma Benosa
6/19/2007 6:36:59 AM

Oh, so you like Casey? That means, you consider yourself successful... and brave? Hmmm...

The answer as to who Linc Bartlett would marry is not made definite in the book. Dunross thinks it's Casey. Casey's afraid it's going to be Orlanda. Orlanda's sure it's gonna be her.

There are indications Linc's madly in love with Orlanda. But there are also signs that he deeply cares about Casey.

Like Casey, I'm afraid it's Orlanda he's going to marry. But if it were up to me (reader), I'd choose Casey over Orlanda... anytime.

6/19/2007 6:44:33 AM

Ei, apay saba-sabali ti uni na dayta katawam?

Now you sound like mangmangkik! Nyehehehe...

VF
6/19/2007 10:39:17 AM

It was an easy riddle my dear. You really need to read the book again.

Here’s how I got the answer.

Linc was a divorced man, divorced from a very assuming wife. Casey’s educated and civilized, strong willed and independent. Orlanda was well known in the book to be another presumptuous woman, like his former wife, -an Asian version, subtler. He is not to settle again for another bitter divorce, will he?

Linc realized Casey was her woman, only when he was trapped in that landslide.

Diay katawak? Aw, you know me; I always make a throaty laugh when I know I’m winning!

raH raH raH!

Sherma Benosa
6/19/2007 7:30:23 PM

I re-read that part where Linc was trapped. Particularly his conversation with Dunross. Many times. And I did not see any indication it was indeed Casey he wanted to marry.

In fact, I always wondered what made Dunross so sure that it was indeed Casey. And now you.

Could it be that it's a man thing? That you and Dunross understand Linc because you are a man?

//What made you think you're winning, eh?

Oist VF. Was able to buy the book we wanted (S-G by JC). Would you believe na yung guy dun sa isang stall is almost as good as the old man? I swear. He suggested some books by JC.

The other books by the other authors are out of stock, but they said they might be able to get hold of them by next week. I bought na lang "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and "The Devil Wears Prada" by Lauren Weisberger. (Don't you dare laugh at me re: "Devil..." Hmp!). Of course, I now have "Shogun."

Very good Ms. Benosa. Now, you are reading real books!

I know that Gabriel Garcia Marquez won a Nobel prize but I got bored with his writing style with the "One Hundred Years of Solitude". I went only as far as 10 pages.

Good luck!

Shogun. Lemisi how much you can learn from feudal Japan! Want somebody to hold the book while you read Ms. Benosa? It's rather heavy.

Get some books by Leon Uris misee. He's good too. Suggested titles are: The Haj and Exodus.
