2006 Nakem Centennial Conference


2006 Nakem Centennial Conference, an international conference of scholars, cultural advocates and administrators, academics, creative writers, and Ilokanologists (or those experts on Ilokano studies), to be held at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, November 9-12, 2006. Theme of the conference is "Nakem: Imagination and Critical Consciousness in Ilokano Language, Culture, and Politics".

National Artist Bien Lumbera will give the keynote address; other invited keynote speakers are scholars on Ilokano and Amianan culture Lilia Quindoza Santiago and Ma Crisanta Nelmida Flores. Researchers, writers, and Ilokano studies scholars from the Philippines, Hawaii and Mainland USA, Australia, and Japan are expected to attend this centennial conference.

The conference has been organized by the Ilokano and Philippine Drama and Film Program,
U of Hawaii at Manoa and is sponsored by the National Foreign Language Resource Center and the Center for Philippine Studies.
